Draw up a list of what is stored, with the condition of each item, and keep a copy; photograph the important pieces. Perishable food, flammable products, gas cylinders, aerosols and animals are not stored. ID documents, jewellery, keys, medicines and valuables stay with you, never in a storage unit.
Furniture must be clean and completely dry before storage: a damp item goes mouldy within weeks. It is raised off the floor on pallets, covered with breathable covers rather than airtight plastic, and drawers are emptied. Plan for ventilation of the unit and a check-up visit if storage lasts several months.
