What damages belongings in storage is almost always sloppy packing. Furniture covered, fragile items padded, boxes labelled and stackable: the preparation determines the state of everything when it comes out. On Helplease, you describe your needs and the workers offering this service in Haiti are notified of your request.
Depending on the agreement, the service can include supplying packing materials, covering furniture, packing fragile items, boxing up, labelling and preparing the load.
Draw up a list of what is stored, with the condition of each item, and keep a copy; photograph the important pieces. Perishable food, flammable products, gas cylinders, aerosols and animals are not stored. ID documents, jewellery, keys, medicines and valuables stay with you, never in a storage unit.
Furniture must be clean and completely dry before storage: a damp item goes mouldy within weeks. It is raised off the floor on pallets, covered with breathable covers rather than airtight plastic, and drawers are emptied. Plan for ventilation of the unit and a check-up visit if storage lasts several months.
The rate is agreed with the worker based on these elements.
Depending on the site and the agreement; state it in advance.
From short term to several months; agree on duration and conditions.
It is done together before the furniture leaves; keep a copy.
