Bleeding radiators in South Africa

Bleeding radiators — South Africa

A radiator hot at the bottom and cold at the top, or gurgling, has air in it: it heats half as well for the same consumption. Bleeding follows an order, from the closest to the furthest from the boiler, then the pressure is restored. On Helplease, you describe your needs and the workers offering this service in South Africa are notified of your request.

What the service covers

bleeding all the radiators;
checking and restoring the pressure;
radiator cold at the top or the bottom;
water noises and gurgling;
advice on settings for winter.

Depending on the agreement, the job can include identifying the radiators concerned, bleeding them in order, checking the pressure, refilling if needed, restarting the heating and a full heat test.

Key points

Hot water, pressure and bleeding

A heating circuit holds scalding water under pressure: bleeding is done with the heating off and the circuit cooled, with a container and a cloth under the valve. Never force a seized bleed screw, and do not drain a system without knowing how to refill and repressurise it. Afterwards, the system pressure is checked and restored if needed.

Quote and vigilance in an emergency

An emergency call-out is still a service that can be discussed: ask for the estimated amount before the work starts, a detailed invoice at the end, and refuse to sign a document you have not read. Be wary of anyone piling up unjustified replacements, demanding immediate cash payment or refusing to put their estimate in writing. The worker must be qualified for the work concerned.

What affects the price

nature of the work;
equipment and parts;
difficulty of access;
length of the job;
number of units involved.

The rate is agreed with the worker based on these elements.
