A door slammed shut on a Sunday evening will not wait. Opening is first attempted without damage, and replacing the lock only becomes necessary if there is no other way in. On Helplease, you describe your needs and the workers offering this service in Canada are notified of your request.
Depending on the agreement, the call-out can include checking identity and the link with the home, attempting non-destructive opening, an estimate before work, the opening, replacement if needed and a closing test.
Before opening anything, the worker asks for identification and a document linking the person to the home: that protects you as much as them. Opening is first attempted without damage; drilling only comes in if the lock leaves no other option, and replacement is discussed beforehand. If a child, a vulnerable person or an animal is locked in, or if water or gas is running inside, call the emergency services straight away.
An emergency call-out is still a service that can be discussed: ask for the estimated amount before the work starts, a detailed invoice at the end, and refuse to sign a document you have not read. Be wary of anyone piling up unjustified replacements, demanding immediate cash payment or refusing to put their estimate in writing. The worker must be qualified for the work concerned.
The rate is agreed with the worker based on these elements.
