Clay forgives a lot: while it is damp, you start again. Hand building or throwing, the first sessions mainly teach you to centre, to feel the thickness and to accept that the piece has a say. On Helplease, you describe your needs and the workers offering this service in Saint Lucia are notified of your request.
Depending on the agreement, the session can include preparing the clay, guided learning, making a piece, drying, glazing and arranging the firing if planned.
Dry clay dust is never swept: it is cleaned with a damp sponge, because fine dust gets breathed in. Glazes and pigments can contain harmful compounds: gloves, ventilation, no contact with the mouth, and a glazed piece is only food-safe if the glaze and the firing allow it. Firing is done in a proper kiln, never a kitchen oven, in a ventilated space out of children's reach.
For a learner under 18, the workshop takes place in a shared room or with the door open, at an agreed time, with parents informed about the content. Materials are chosen to suit the age: cutting tools, strong glues, fixatives and sprays are used under adult supervision, in a ventilated room and on a protected surface. Products are resealed after use and stored out of children's reach.
The rate is agreed with the worker based on these elements.
