A battery almost never dies without warning: slower starts, dimming headlights, flickering warning lights. The test separates a battery at the end of its life from an alternator problem, which would otherwise come back the next day. On Helplease, you describe your needs and the workers offering this service in Canada are notified of your request.
Depending on the agreement, the job can include the jump start, testing the battery and charging circuit, the estimate, replacement, a test after replacement and taking away the old battery.
A battery gives off a flammable gas: no flame, no cigarette, no sparks nearby, and never lay a metal tool across the terminals. Connection follows the order — positive first, earth on a metal part away from the battery — and disconnection in reverse. Goggles and gloves are necessary: the electrolyte burns skin and eyes. A swollen or frozen battery is not jump-started.
An emergency call-out is still a service that can be discussed: ask for the estimated amount before the work starts, a detailed invoice at the end, and refuse to sign a document you have not read. Be wary of anyone piling up unjustified replacements, demanding immediate cash payment or refusing to put their estimate in writing. The worker must be qualified for the work concerned.
The rate is agreed with the worker based on these elements.
